The Fall

Mariah heard a clap of thunder in the distance, and the storm raged on, shedding torrents of rain on the forest. Mariah was mesmerized by the sight of the giant tree in front of her, when suddenly it stumbled. Mariah jumped back just as the gargantuan oak came tumbling down with an thunderous boom. The ground felt as if it were rolling beneath her. And at that moment there was absolutely nothing: no relentless storm, no whistle of wind, no flash of lightning, nothing, just nothing. In the blink of an eye, the tree had collapsed. It just lay in front of her, staring right back. She didn't understand it. It was standing, and then it wasn't-- just too simple. There had to be more to it than that, but there wasn't. There was no battle, no struggle, no clash between the two forces of nature. The tree gave in, just like that. Towering above her, intimidating to the core, so grand and dignified, and it didn't even give up a fight. And it just lay there, shamed, banished from the skies, forever grounded.
